When using a set of Bowflex SelectTect 552 Dumbbells (2009 Model) one of the main advantages you will notice is that you will use a lot of your extra smaller muscles that are used to stabilise your body. When lifting a barbell the barbell itself actually acts as a stabiliser to the weight that is on the bar. Barbells that are used in a workout also reduce the need for the more complex body coordination that is needed to lift dumbbells.
Pound for pound you can lift more actual weight on a barbell then with dumbbells, but your muscles don’t have to work anywhere near as hard as they would if that same amount of weight was on a pair of dumbbells. When doing the bench press if you can lift 100 lbs at ten reps you probably won’t be able to lift two 50lb dumbbells in the same manner. If you can do between 6-8 reps, your muscles will have to work much harder to control the movement of the two independent dumbbells in your workout and with either less reps or weight you will actually be getting more in your workout with doing less.
