If you are looking for a little variety using a traditional exercise, try the alternating chest press. Using an exercise ball instead of a bench, you’ll involve the lower body making this a whole-body move. By alternating the arms, the core and stabilizer muscles will kick in to help keep your body from rocking back and forth. Thirdly, one arm holds an isometric contraction while the other arm moves, which adds some more intensity.
To do the actual exercise, lie on a ball with the head and neck supported. Begin with the arms bent in a goal-post position and keep the left arm in place while pressing the right arm up over the chest. Lower the right arm, hold that position and press the left arm up. Continue alternating arms for 1-3 sets of 8-12 reps. The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells (2009 Model) are perfect for this exercise, because just a turn of the dial and you immediately have your weight and you also have 15 sets of dumbbells in the one adjustable set.
